Brisbane to Great Keppel Island Tropical Yacht Race
Tuesday, March 27th, 2007
Start time: 1100 hours Friday 3rd August 2007
The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron has officially announced the inaugural ‘Brisbane to Great Keppel Island Tropical Yacht Race’.
The race will be conducted from a start line in Moreton Bay at 1100 hours on Friday 3 August 2007 and travelling 340 nautical miles north along the east coast of Queensland finishing directly in view of the Great Keppel Island Tourist Resort.

Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Commodore Kevin Miller said “The Squadron has for several years been looking for a yachting Signature Event. The formulation of such a race links the involvement of yachts from southern states sailing the east coast heading to the popular Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island Race Weeks with South-East Queensland based yachts.
Rear Commodore Russell McCart, assigned with coordinating the event for the Squadron, stated that whilst this was the first year and entrants may be limited, the race would grow to become a major event on the east coast winter yachting calendar.
With the support of new management at Great Keppel Island the post race presentations would take on the theme of a tropical party and develop in the future as a race and social week of activities.
International Race Officer Denis Thompson has been secured to assist with the management and administration of the event in its inaugural year. A dedicated website http://www.greatkeppelyachtrace.com has been established to host the Notice of Race, promotions and accommodation packages for the event.
The event will jointly be sponsored by Meridien Marinas, The Robert Bird Group and Great Keppel Island Resort.
