Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race Showcases New Technology

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

sms.jpgOrganisers of the Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race today announced new ways for spectators to follow the race. Yachts competing in the race will be able to send short mobile updates to the race committee which will appear on the race website within minutes.

“This will give a chance for yachts to quickly fire off an update of their progress to the public when they come within mobile range,” said race organiser Suellen Hurling. “It can often be hard for spectators to get a true idea of the events happening during the race, and this will make the gap between the sailors and spectators even smaller.”

The race organisers will also be providing updates through not only media releases on the race website, but will also be sending out a number of scheduled SMS updates during the race. The free service allows spectators to receive up to date SMS updates to their mobile phone at no cost. “Not everyone has time to refresh the race website every 5 minutes for updates, SMS updates allow spectators to follow the race through their mobile phones.” said Suellen Hurling.

Keppel Bay Marina will welcome the yachts that will begin to arrive either late Sunday evening or Sunday night the 3rd of August.

The line honours favourite is the Reichel Pugh 66 Black Jack that will compete in her first event this weekend in the Audi Sydney to Gold Coast Race. Black Jack was recently launched by Sir Jack Brabham at Brisbane’s Rivergate Marina.

Some competing yachts will line up with Black Jack at Rivergate Marina prior to the race with the remainder of the fleet at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Marina.

Keppel Bay Marina General Manager Kylie Wilson has arranged some fantastic entertainment for the crews upon their arrival at Rosslyn Bay.

Twenty yachts have now registered to compete in the 2nd Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race which is due to start on Saturday 2nd August on Moreton Bay east of Brisbane.

Amongst these entries is a brand new cruising yacht built by Brisbane local Peter Lewis. Named after his Father In-Law this Bluewater 450M has been christened Charlie’s Dream.

“The Brisbane to Keppel race will be the first adventure for this yacht. It’s taken us 18 months to construct her and we are looking forward to finally getting her on the open water where she belongs,” said Lewis. “My Father-in-Law was my Scout Master many many years ago, when I was 8 years old actually. We had a great time camping and enjoying the outdoors and he always loved the water. My son and Father-in-Law chartered a yacht some time ago and this yacht would have been his dream. Hence the name Charlie’s Dream!”

Also competing in this year’s race is the sailing school charter yacht Southern Cross Yachting. Skippered by Southern Cross Yachting’s owner and operator Michael Job, the Sydney 41 will be taking 6 students on board for this trip. The students are using the race for experience all who are keen to get aboard other racing yachts in the future.

“Southern Cross Yachting would prefer light head winds for the race and as that’s not going to happen we hope some of the other boats will leave some beer for us by the time we get there!” laughed Job. “In all honesty it’s going to be a fun race and I know the students we are taking are looking forward to it.”

Entries for the 2nd Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race close this Friday the 18th of July. The race starts in the waters of Moreton Bay with yachts travelling approximately 348 nautical miles finishes outside of Keppel Bay Marina. Upon arrival crews will be welcomed with live music and celebrations as the local community get involved with the race.
